The Saipan Tribune reported on the hearings for House Bill 16-86 which proposes local status for long-term guest workers.

Hearings will be held on all three islands:

SAIPAN: June 12, 2008, 6pm, at the House chamber in the Legislative Building on Capital Hill.

ROTA: Saturday, June 7, 2008, 8am to 5pm at the Rota Round House.

TINIAN: Saturday, June 14, 2008, 8am to 5pm at the Tinian High School cafeteria.

The article states:

"The House of Representatives is moving ahead with a local bill seeking improved immigration status for long-time guest workers in the CNMI despite the federalization measure now in place.

Public hearings have been scheduled for House Bill 16-86, which proposes to allow eligible alien workers to live and work at will in the Commonwealth.

Rep. Tina Sablan, one of the bill's sponsors, said that proponents of the measure are hoping the proposal can be considered when the regulations are drafted for the new federalized immigration system for the Commonwealth."
