A Perfect Voice Silenced

February 12, 2012

One of the most beautiful voices in the world has been silenced. Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel room at the Beverley Hills Hilton. She was scheduled to perform at a Grammy Awards party to be held tonight. The awards show opened with a prayer and a tribute to her.

Whitney was the daughter of another Grammy-winning singer, Cissy Houston. Her daughter Bobbi Kristine, is an aspiring singer and actress. Her godmother is Aretha Franklin; her cousin is Dionne Warwick.

During my lifetime I have collected hundreds of albums and CDs. Only a few female voices have made it into my collection – Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Chapman, Nora Jones, Adele, Lolita Carbon and Whitney Houston. Whitney Houston had a voice like smooth crystal. She possessed a gospel background that enabled her to make you feel the music, not just hear it. Who else could make the national anthem, a not-so-beautiful song, sound beautiful?
