Governor Fitial called the Rota and Tinian Senators "stupid" for killing the House bill to legalize Saipan gambling. Former Tinian Senator David Cing responded by saying, "Maybe we are stupid because we voted for him in 2009.”
It sure doesn't seem that gambling worked out so well in Tinian. The Tinian Dynasty and Hotel cannot even pay the foreign workers on time and owes hundreds of thousands in back taxes to the CNMI.
It sure doesn't look like gambling worked out so well in Rota either. The Rota Hotel turned casino closed due to lack of business, but not before stealing wages from the foreign workers. Not to mention that the people of Saipan said no to casinos at the ballot box.
Enacting a law to legalize casinos on Saipan cannot help the CNMI raise the revenue that is needed right now (or yesterday). Can a casino magically be constructed and up and running in a day, a month, a year, two years? How many investors does Fitial have lined up to drop $10 million for a license fee? Maybe Tenorio and Fitial are angry that the Senate killed the bill because they will lose out on the kickbacks they would have pocketed if the law had passed.
I wonder if the Republican Party is regretting selecting this governor for their "leader". One thing is for sure. Fitial might not want to visit Rota or Tinian any time soon.
