Undocumented Immigrants Released Ahead of Sequester Cuts

February 27, 2013

The looming sequester has forced ICE officials to take an unusual move. Citing "fiscal uncertainty" hundreds of undocumented immigrants were released from prisons across the country.  Their cases remain ongoing while the former detainees are now out on supervised release.

The undocumented aliens who were released are "noncriminals and low-risk offenders without a criminal history."

USA Today quoted Barbara Gonzalez ICE press secretary:
Because of the "fiscal uncertainty" hovering over the federal government, she said it was necessary to release them "to ensure detention levels stay within ICE's current budget."
"Priority for detention remains on serious criminal offenders and other individuals who pose a significant threat to public safety," she said.
Some of the released detainees were behind bars for minor offenses. One undocumented 19-year -old immigrant was jailed in Georgia for failing to use a turn signal.

Ignorant anti-immigrant folk, including members of the U.S. Congress, are incorrectly stating that President Obama was responsible for the release of undocumented aliens. Not true. The decision was made by ICE officials, not by President Obama as ICE spokesman Jay Carney clarified. I guess blaming the President is more fun.

The sequester will result in $85 billion in cuts. There are currently 30,700 undocumented immigrants in prison. ICE reported that a couple hundred were released.  NPR reported:
Last year, the National Immigration Forum estimated that the cost per ICE detainee ranges $122-$164 per day. The organization also estimated that alternative methods of detention cost significantly less, between 30-cents to $14 per day per detainee.
Should taxpayers be paying $164 a day to hold an undocumented immigrant for not using a turn signal? I would say no.

ICE can't make a move without Obama, especially one like this. There are an estimated two thousand hardened killers from El Salvador, Nicaragua and Mexico who may not have committed any crimes in the US but they are killers. ICE knows this as do police who arrest them even for minor traffic incidents.

then by the same token ICE can deport whom they decide to deport, it doesn't matter if the president doesn't feel those people should be deported. can't have your cake and eat it too. This is a bad move for the president and his administration. Not all 10,000 people that ICE are releasing are non-crim, pay attention to the "low-risk" designation they are giving them and watch out when some of them go right out and commit a crime. some in the media are watching.

A political stunt by the Administration to scare people of the sequestration is going to foul up any serious immigration reform. The claims that the Pres and Napalotano didn't know about this are laughable. that some people believe that shows just how little they know about how fed agencies and washington works..........but Obama said he didn't know so it must be true...hahahaha

7:33 Instincts cannot be seen but only be felt. DSH is taking proper action to eliminate cost cutting and promoting non-criminal to join the USA community again.
